ScienceDaily (Feb. 8, 2010) — Northwestern University researchers are the first to design a bioactive nanomaterial that promotes the growth of new cartilage in vivo and without the use of expensive growth factors. Minimally invasive, the therapy activates the bone marrow stem cells and produces natural cartilage. No conventional therapy can do this.

“Unlike bone, cartilage does not grow back, and therefore clinical strategies to regenerate this tissue are of great interest,” said Samuel I. Stupp, senior author, Board of Trustees Professor of Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering, and Medicine, and director of the Institute for BioNanotechnology in Medicine. Countless people — amateur athletes, professional athletes and people whose joints have just worn out — learn this all too well when they bring their bad knees, shoulders and elbows to an orthopaedic surgeon.

Damaged cartilage can lead to joint pain and loss of physical function and eventually to osteoarthritis, a disorder with an estimated economic impact approaching $65 billion in the United States. With an aging and increasingly active population, this is expected to grow.

“Cartilage does not regenerate in adults. Once you are fully grown you have all the cartilage you’ll ever have,” said first author Ramille N. Shah, assistant professor of materials science and engineering at the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science and assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery at the Feinberg School of Medicine. Shah is also a resident faculty member at the Institute for BioNanotechnology in Medicine.

Type II collagen is the major protein in articular cartilage, the smooth, white connective tissue that covers the ends of bones where they come together to form joints.

“Our material of nanoscopic fibers stimulates stem cells present in bone marrow to produce cartilage containing type II collagen and repair the damaged joint,” Shah said. “A procedure called microfracture is the most common technique currently used by doctors, but it tends to produce a cartilage having predominantly type I collagen which is more like scar tissue.”

The Northwestern gel is injected as a liquid to the area of the damaged joint, where it then self-assembles and forms a solid. This extracellular matrix, which mimics what cells usually see, binds by molecular design one of the most important growth factors for the repair and regeneration of cartilage. By keeping the growth factor concentrated and localized, the cartilage cells have the opportunity to regenerate.

Together with Nirav A. Shah, a sports medicine orthopaedic surgeon and former orthopaedic resident at Northwestern, the researchers implanted their nanofiber gel in an animal model with cartilage defects.

The animals were treated with microfracture, where tiny holes are made in the bone beneath the damaged cartilage to create a new blood supply to stimulate the growth of new cartilage. The researchers tested various combinations: microfracture alone; microfracture and the nanofiber gel with growth factor added; and microfracture and the nanofiber gel without growth factor added.

They found their technique produced much better results than the microfracture procedure alone and, more importantly, found that addition of the expensive growth factor was not required to get the best results. Instead, because of the molecular design of the gel material, growth factor already present in the body is enough to regenerate cartilage.

The matrix only needed to be present for a month to produce cartilage growth. The matrix, based on self-assembling molecules known as peptide amphiphiles, biodegrades into nutrients and is replaced by natural cartilage.

The National Institutes of Health and the company Nanotope supported the research.

Aircraft landing on runways across the UK could feed electricity into the National Grid by converting braking energy into electricity.

The long-term concept is the centrepiece of a £160,597 EPSRC-sponsored feasibility study involving academics from Liverpool, Lincoln and Loughborough universities, plus industrial partner EADS UK. Initial results of the research are expected in October this year.

The inventor of the ambitious concept Qing-Chang Zhong, an electrical engineer from Liverpool University, proposes that once aeroplanes touch down on the runway they would catch up with and attach to a moving platform — the parking vehicle — equipped with energised coils in its wheels.

The inertia of the rolling aircraft would push the parking vehicle forward and the electricity generated in the coils would be processed by a power conditioning and control system on the ground.

Zhong envisions parking vehicles would be connected — like a tramcar — to low-lying electrical wires on the side of the runway so that the generated electricity could be fed into the grid after processing, essentially changing the aircraft/runway into a power generator.

He estimated that the average power dissipated during the 30 second landing of a 40-ton aircraft travelling at 150mph amounts to 3MW.

eathrow Airport, where an aircraft lands every two minutes, would give an average power source of 750kW.

Zhong said that the key enabler of this technology will be the parking vehicle, which must move down the runway ahead of the landing aeroplane at 150mph, the speed at which most aircraft travel when first touching down.

He admitted that such an untested concept raises many safety concerns that will need to be addressed in his feasibility study.

One of the top tasks, added Zhong, will be to identify an optimal topology for the energy-converting vehicle. There will also need to be a thorough assessment of the mechanical impact of it on the aircraft. Much of this impact could be alleviated by driving the vehicle at a similar speed to the aircraft, said Zhong.

He added that the parking vehicle’s power system will be capable of getting it up to such great speed. ‘Once the aircraft attaches to the parking vehicle it will be changed to a generator,’ he said.

According to Zhong, if his mathematical models prove to be true, the energy recovered from the generator would far outweigh any energy exerted by the power system. However, a major challenge will be developing the right power conditioning methods and control system to process the electricity recovered from the landing aircraft before feeding to the grid. The electricity generated will have a variable voltage and frequency because the speed of the aircraft decreases as time passes. Also, the speed, mass and braking force of each aircraft are different.

Zhong said that aircraft land discontinuously, which means that the electricity generated is impulsive.

He has applied for a patent for his energy-recovering concept and is aware of a patent on only one other aircraft energy-recovery system.

Zhong said that particular system regenerates power back to the aircraft, but it requires an on-board installation. With Zhong’s concept, airport operators would be able to implement the technology without involvement of aircraft manufacturers and airlines.

The EPSRC study will primarily be conducted in simulation, however Zhong and his colleagues are expected to conduct basic experimentation to support and confirm the simulation results. A test rig is being set up at Liverpool University to verify the theory and technology for the power conditioning and control system.

If the study is successful, Zhong said he will be able to further develop his concept for more intensive lab tests, leading to a prototype.

ScienceDaily (Feb. 4, 2010) — Physicists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have built an enhanced version of an experimental atomic clock based on a single aluminum atom that is now the world’s most precise clock, more than twice as precise as the previous pacesetter based on a mercury atom.

The new aluminum clock would neither gain nor lose one second in about 3.7 billion years, according to measurements to be reported in Physical Review Letters.*

The new clock is the second version of NIST’s “quantum logic clock,” so called because it borrows the logical processing used for atoms storing data in experimental quantum computing, another major focus of the same NIST research group. The second version of the logic clock offers more than twice the precision of the original. >full story

Renewable energy is no longer limited to large-scale wind turbines

and solar panels; countless gadgets are now on the market to

make life just a little more sustainable without the pain

and inconvenience of constructing a hydroelectric dam in

your backyard.

Here are seven products—some prototypes, some actually for sale

that gather energy as they serve their purpose.

1. Blinded by the Light

Household blinds that merely block out sunlight are a thing of the past. Now, shades can absorb that solar energy instead of just barring it from your home. These high-tech shades have thin-film solar panels that absorb light energy while keeping your pad cool during the day. Once night hits, the juiced-up battery pack can be removed and used to charge an iPod, phone or other products via USB connection

2. Disco Tech

A few select clubs are powering up as dancers get down, thanks to springs in the floor that produce electricity when they move. The system connects to nearby batteries that, in turn, power 60 percent of a given club’s electricity. Club owners in Britain hope to teach youth the lessons of global warming and sustainability in a fun and fresh way, and as a bonus, offer free admission to those who forgo driving to walk or pedal in.

3. Tesla Trainer

This jump-rope charges a flashlight with the kinetic energy produced in every skip. It also keeps track of just how much hopping about is being done and keeps a running update on the charge status of your flashlight.

4. Plug-In Pine

There’s at least one kind of tree that doesn’t require sunlight to thrive. The Piezo-tree, engineered by Cornell University researchers, converts wind energy into electrical energy as it sways in the breeze. Scientists are still toying with leaf and tree shape and bulk to ensure large amounts of wind conversion in its capacitor storage system.

5. On-And-Off Rocker

Even the seemingly classic rocking chair is due for an upgrade. This new concept rocker comes equipped with a reading light that is powered by the kinetic energy of the chair’s movement. With every rock, the chair charges its own book-light batteries

6. Shave and a Kilowatt

The PowerPlus Piranha Electric Shaver offers a shave with the spin of a hand crank. When wound, the razor collects and stores mechanical energy in its internal battery, offering that same smooth electric shave without the hassle of a plug.

7. Jean JuiceEveryone has at some time found themselves far from an outlet with a dying cellphone. One way to prevent this, researchers say, would be to wear made from , “conductive energy textiles” that actually creates energy. The carbon fibers in these futuristic textiles act as a rechargeable battery and, theoretically, have the ability to give a power boost.
